Sunday was a travel day consisting of about 3 hours by train from Basel to Zermatt with one change at Visp that included a very short layover of 10 minutes. The layover provided just sufficient time to grab some sparkling water from the station COOP store. Although the whistle had been blown when I was still in the store, I needed to do a sprint up the stairs and along the train platform to where an anxious wife and son were holding the door ajar to let me board. Phew!
The Zermatt trains have extra large windows allowing the passengers ample views of the amazing scenery. I tried to capture some just to give you some idea.
Once we arrived we checked into to our hotel Alpen and collected our ski gear which was sent ahead. For those who might be unaware Swiss SBB will collect luggage from your home send to your destination resort and transport to your designated hotel. This can be invaluable when you have a large amount of luggage, such as ski vacations for example or young kids which require lots of items. The latter we helped one of Ryan's school teachers who was doing both skiing with a youngster.
After this we did the ski rental for snowboards and skis. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
On our return to the hotel after a short but sweet visit to a local wine bar we photographed ourselves with some local wildlife!
For dinner we just stayed at our hotel restaurant as everyone was tired from the travel and was preparing for the following day.
