Ryan has moved into the early adolescence age having his birthday during lockdown here in Basel.
The lockdown has made it a challenge to celebrate with the usual vigor and decor but we tried our best.
The local grocery store had some basic decorations for birthdays that were deemed essential items and so were not walled off. This included balloons, cake candles, cards, paper plates, cups and small banners and streamers! Ok, that will do nicely. Grab those. The toy aisle was walled off! No small toys for kids - that sucks! Wine aisle, wide-open! Great, grab a couple of bottles! Well, the adults require some help to get through this. Finally, the Swisscom internet service provider was open. They have electronics and gadgets. Ryan had broken his bluetooth headphones! Yay. I mean, thankfully, we can get some updated fancy noise-canceling, comfy variations that will help with his online learning and school work. Oh, and also the gaming and chatting to his buddies too.
The night before we decorated after we finally got the kids to sleep.
Pepper was not a fan of the balloon inflation process! She was beside herself with anxiety and ran off and hid in my office!
The big day arrived and we had burritos for dinner, Ryan's second choice. This was a Thursday and a school night which did not allow sufficient opportunity to make his first request, Lasagna! A compromise was made as the following day was the Swiss national holiday of May day, with the promise to make it for Friday night sealed the deal.
The Tex-Mex Dinner was still awesome and very tasty. Dessert was a request of cinnamon bread just like we had in Zermatt!! No pressure Andi! At least it was not Bend's Sparrow Bakery's banana bread! If you have never been, it is mandatory if you are in central Oregon!
Opening cards and presents during dinner!
The birthday card was Superman and had Tina Turner singing "You're simply the best!" We
ll, what can you expect with limited options in a world wide lockdown?
Ryan was thankful and excited to be a teenager, stating very clearly, "Now I can be moody!". Meaning more than normal, furthermore, sleeping in until noon on Saturdays!
Ryan did do a 2 1/2 mile run on his own for his birthday workout and sports hour that he had on his schedule! We were impressed, there is still some hope he might be a runner yet! He definitely has the raw talent! Keeping our fingers crossed.
Happy Birthday to our teenager boy!
Here is one of Ryan's fun movie and favorite characters joining in the celebrations.
Next up mini-mama! Gulp!!!
