Lyon

A closed school day and a PTO day meant a weekend visit slightly further afield. We had recommendations for a visit to Lyon in France and it certainly did not disappoint.

Pepper was excited as she got to visit the dog holiday home in Therwil, which is about 4 miles from home.

Pepper packed for doggie hotel

We decided that the trains were a great option. After work and school on the Thursday we headed to the train station.

Unfortunately, our train was delayed due to the train ahead of us hitting an animal on the track. So sad. We still made the connection as they held the train for all the passengers heading down to Lyon and onto Marseille.

Dinner was sandwiches and snacks we got to eat on the train.

We arrived late on the Thursday night, taxied to the hotel and crashed out.

Friday we headed out from our new found location to see the Bellecour place and the old town of Lyon.

We visited a cool museum of movie making and miniature models.

Here a few shots I captured along the way.

Here is the link to their website for further details and photos on what and how they do it!

We looked around the old town of Lyon with its narrow streets and fascinating architecture. The kids ate crepes with chocolate spread or some sugary topping to fight the hunger pains.

Saturday we visited the cathedral which involved some climbing to get to the top of the hill, but once there, the views of Lyon were amazing even on a damp and drizzly day.

Saturday night we ate the traditional restaurant owned by the Paul Bocuse organization at the Gare du de l'est, which as the name suggests an old rail station. A stunning building.

Sunday we hit the indoor food market which was insane and one of the best food halls you could imagine.

After that we visited the remains of the Roman Amphitheater.

The kids loved this and got a major opportunity to get their "wiggles" out before our train journey back to Basel.

Just before we left for the train we grabbed some food at one of the few open restaurants- here Andi made the mistake of ordering andouillette sausage!!! She could not get past the pungent odor. I tried and conquered about half of it.

Here is a link to a description of the andouillette sausage

The return used the subway trains to return to the Gare de Lyon and following on from that the TGV.
