A interesting town to visit which is famous for a district known as "Little Venice", which has part of the river lined by houses both sides and is very reminiscent of the canals of Venice.
On our arrival we also discovered a large replica of the statue of Liberty. Only later did we find the reason was due to the creator's hometown was Colmar, France. The creator was Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.
You can read more about the creator here
It was still a rainy day and the kids both caused chaos with their umbrellas with the fellow pedestrians circumnavigating the often narrow streets of town.
The town is widely known for its gastronomy and has multiple Michelin starred restaurants. We discovered one or two and will return to try them out one of these weekends.
The talk of great food made all of use hungry and we ate at a patisserie. Ryan tried the scrambled eggs with chives! He decided that he was not a fan of chives but then decided that the eggs needed more spices. He is a hard man to please on occasion.
Hayley was not able to decide and was not impressed by the service.
I had the cheese and ham quiche with a light salad and Andi similarly chose the cheese and ham omelet. Both were good and were washed down with a Kir Royal and a glass of champagne.
We found the indoor market which closed just prior to our arrival and looking through the windows and drooling did not open any doors!
Since we were visiting the Alsace region we purchased a couple of wines to try that the region is renowned for. Typically those are wines made of the riesling and gewürztraminer grape varietals.
Wandering around little Venice we did see lots of people waiting and getting on boat rides to cruise up and down the river. There were some very romantic restaurants overlooking and indeed overhanging the river.
We found a stage all prepped for a band or two to start up. People waiting for them to begin while drinking beers and cocktails.
Not too far from the indoor market we discovered a great little shop selling cured meats with the usual pork but duck and pheasant as well and with lots of variations on spices. Not only did they just specialize in meats but they made some wonderful pretzels to order.
We shall be back for dinner soon!
